The Joy of Spring Decluttering

I’m so grateful that Spring is here!  With Spring we welcome warmer temperatures, longer days, and a renewed quality to the colour and light that surrounds us.   We may also notice changes in our energy levels, find ourselves more motivated and we feel happier.

With the sense of renewal that comes with Spring, there is no better time in the year to renew your space.  Traditionally spring is a time for cleaning.  I’m sometimes asked if I clean as part of my service as a Professional Declutterer and Organiser (the answer is ‘no’ by the way - I despise cleaning and will do everything within my power to avoid it!).

But decluttering is different because decluttering can be empowering, compassionate, creative, fun and challenging.   Decluttering is renewal.  It’s an opportunity for us not only to reset and renew our homes, but to remind ourselves of what we love, what we need, what is important to us, what we are good at, what is working for us now, and how we are feeling.

And from a practical perspective Spring is also the perfect time to do it.  Not only because we have more energy, but the warmer weather and longer days makes it easier for us to open our windows and our homes, use our outdoor spaces and sort through our belongings.

If you are motivated to declutter this Spring, then here are some great places to start.

  • Outdoor storage areas (garages, sheds and outhouses) - tools, outdoor equipment, garden furniture, garden toys and games, bikes and sports equipment

  • Clothing - Declutter your clothing, shoes and bedding for Spring.  Pack away winter woolies, coats and bulky bedding, if that’s something that appeals.    If you have growing children check what they have for the season and donate outgrown clothes and shoes.   Address any gaps so you know they have what they need

And my top tip for decluttering in Spring would simply be to open your windows each day.   Not only is this great for the air quality and health of your home but it sets an intention.  It demonstrates that we are open, that we are taking responsibility for our homes and our lives, and it connects us to the outside world, reminding us that we are not alone.  You can also listen to the outdoor soundtrack that Spring has to offer, be it the birds or the bees, or the planes …
